Generation III

Madison Craigo was born 17 October 1840 in VA and died 1913 in Putnam Co, WV.

Madison Craigo first enlisted in the Confederate army, 22nd Virginia Infantry Regiment on 22 May 1861. A muster roll document dated 31 August 1861 states that he enlisted at the "mouth of Poca" for a period of one year, yet was not present for muster on 31 August due to having been severely wounded in the hip and thigh by musket balls in the Battle of Scary on 17 July 1861.

On 5 December 1861, Madison Craigo mustered into Lieutenant Blundon's Company of the 8th Virginia Infantry, a Union outfit. He had enlisted 5 October 1861 at Red House for a period of three years. The 8th Virginia became the 7th West Virginia Cavalry, and Madison Craigo was transferred into Company F. He mustered out at Charleston, WV on 1 August 1865.

He is listed in the 7th West Virginia Cavalry "Company Descriptive Book" as having been 6 feet 3 1/2 inches tall with dark complexion, black eyes and black hair. He was stated to have been born in Kanawha Co, VA and to have been a farmer by trade.

"In action at Gauley Bridge when the bridge across Gauley River was burned, Madison had his horse shot out from under him. He escaped by jumping on a fellow soldier's horse and riding double. He lost his rifle when his horse fell.

While he had typhoid fever, his outfit moved off and left him. Someone took his shoes thinking he was not going to get well, so when he recovered he had no shoes. So he wrapped his feet in rags and walked quite a few miles to rejoin his outfit.

My Dad told me that he [Madison] walked from Charleston to Richmond one time to serve on jury duty."

Madison Craigo was active in the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans of the Civil War.

Obituaries (courtesy of Freddie Ann Burnett):

"Madison Craigo, about 70 years of age, and a veteran of the United States Army, having seen active duty throughout the civil war, died at 10 o'clock on Sunday morning, after a week's illness of acute asthma. His death occured at the home of his son, J.M. Craigo, at 1027 Sixth Street, on the West Side, and the funeral will take place from there. The funeral arrangements are in charge of the Barlow establishment. Later announcement will be maade of the time for holding services. (In paper 2-17-1913)"

"The funeral of Madison Craigo, aged seventy three years, who died at his home on Sixth Street, Sunday morning at 10:00 o'clock, took place from the Sixth Street church this morning at 11:00 o'clock instead of yesterday afternoon as was previously announced. Rev. M. Slater conducted the service. The reason for the postponment was that his daughter who lives in Pennsylvania did not arrive in the city until late last night. Mr. Craigo was the father of Mr. Craigo, the secretary of the United Mine Workers, and was widely known about the city. His sister Mrs. Millie Lanham is seriously ill at her home on Rocky Fork and the shock of hearing of her brother's death will probably cause her death. (In the paper 2-19-1913)"
